The “Art and Nature on the Seychelles” Project
Ars et Natura and the Seychelles Tourist Office – Italy have developed an artistic project which aims to promote and preserve the natural environment of the Seychelles in line with the Nature & Benefits Project which was launched by the STB - Seychelles Tourism Board for 2013. The STB - Seychelles Tourism Board and the Seychelles Tourist Office – Italy have met a group of Ars et Natura wildlife artists who, through their paintings and travel sketchbooks, aim to promote and make known in Italy the incredible biodiversity of these islands. The Project has received UNESCO's patronage, for the valorisation of the Vallée de Mai, a World Heritage site, the tropical forest - unique in the world - where the Coco de Mer palm trees grow. The project is also under the patronage of WWF Italia, WWF International and Birdlife International for the importance of the biodiversity and of the endemic species that inhabit the islands.
Federico Gemma, Iole Eulalia Rosa, and Alessandro Troisi are the three Italian artists that, supported and guided by the Seychelles Tourist Office – Italy, the STB and some local sponsors, went to the islands and prepared all the pictorial material (paintings, sketches, notes, and photographs), which will be used for the promotion of the Project and divulgation of the rich biodiversity heritage. The islands and the places visited during this first trip, have been chosen for their high biodiversity value and beautiful scenery: Silhouette, Cerf Island, Cousin (Bird reserve), La Digue, Praslin (Vallée de Mai-Unesco), Mahé, Moyenne (Marine Park). The artists could visit all the different environments found on these islands: the tropical forest, the mangrove forest, the preserved beaches and nesting sites of various species, the sea beds and barrier reef, the spectacular granite stones, and the urban environment. Unique fauna, flora and landscapes, with rare and important endemic species, both animals and plants.
We will only mention a few species which the artists have observed and portrayed: among the plants, the Coco de Mer (Lodoicea maldivica), exclusive plant of the Seychelles, the casuarina (Casuarina equisetifolia), the pandanus (Pandanus balfourii) and the mangrove (Avicennia marina); among the animals, the Aldabra giant tortoise (Geochelone gigantea), Seychelles fruit bat (Pteropus seychellensis), the white tern (Gygis alba), the White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus lepturus), the Seychelles Blue Pigeon (Alectroenas pulcherrima), the Seychelles Sunbird (Nectarinia dussumieri), the frigate birds (Fregata minor and F. ariel), the Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus), the Shearwaters (Puffinus lherminieri and P. pacificus), the endemic passeriformes such as the Seychelles magpie-robin (Copsychus sechellarum), the Seychelles Fody (Foudia sechellarum), the rare and beautiful Seychelles Paradise-flycatcher (Tersiphone corvina), the Seychelles Black Parrot (Coracopsis nigra) and the Seychelles Bulbul (Hypsipetes crassirostris); and also the Seychelles small day gecko (Phelsuma astriata), Seychelles Skinks (Mabuya seychellensis), the horned ghost crabs (Ocypodes ceratophtalmus) and the numerous varieties of fish of the barrier reef…
Ars et Natura thanks the Seychelles Tourism Board and all the partners who have helped the project succeed.
